As the summer approaches, Heritage students are considering how to best spend their upcoming break: some take up jobs, some work internships, while some just relax and rejuvinate. A select few will take part of the summer academy for the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program.

During the school year, participants took part in a virtual course where they wrote research papers and explored mathematical and scientific concepts pertaining to space travel. Based on their performance, a few were selected to travel to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research center at Langley, Virginia.

At Langley, VAST scholars will meet with professionals and prolific specialists from various fields and make connections with fellow students from all over the state. At the program, they’ll work together with the students to develop a pseudo mission to Mars.

Deservingly, they will earn several non-transferable college credits from Thomas Nelson Community College as reward for their efforts in the academy. Some of the members from Heritage’s student body that are enrolled into the summer academy are Abdulah Khan, Nicole Kragness, and Reeha Sidhu.

Before going to the academy, they are required to complete precursory assignments in order to prepare for the course. These students have chosen to pursue a wonderful opportunity at the cost of their own summer break and will continue to achieve and justly reflect the rigor of Heritage students.
